Nathan Yong
Yong is an award-winning designer and successful retail furniture design business owner. He founded FOLKS FURNITURE, a brand that creates modern, contemporary wooden furniture. Additionally, he co-founded GRAFUNKT, a retail company specialising in modern furniture brands.
In 1999, Yong earned his Master of Design degree with distinction from the University of New South Wales, Australia.
His work is inspired by observing the visual environment and challenges objects' existential questions. Rather than including superfluous details, he captures the poetry of products through stripping, endowing objects with qualities that reflect a sense of lightness in their constraints.
Since 2021, Nathan has been the Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Product Design at LASALLE College of the Arts, University of the Arts Singapore. He has mentored his students in producing works that garnered the Red Dot Design Award, Wallpaper* Handmade, and other distinguished accolades.
Yong’s work has been exhibited globally in various cosmopolitan locations such as Singapore, Shizuoka, Milan, London, Cologne, and Taipei. He has also been featured in international magazines like Wallpaper, Monocle, Surface, Dwell, On Office, and Habitus. His clients include Design Within Reach (USA), Ligne Roset (France), Living Divani (Italy), Opinion Ciatti (Italy), Sphaus (Italy), Domicil (Germany), Ethnicraft (Belgium), Elmood (Hong Kong), Mige (China), Royal Selangor (Malaysia), Jewel Changi Airport (Singapore), Grafunkt (Singapore), and many more.
